April Fool's (I wish...)

It's April Fool's Day, but I kid you not -- I walked into a card shop on my break today, and all the Mother's Day stuff was out. (Same scenario in the bookstore I visited at lunch.) Even almost 10 years after Katie's stillbirth, it still feels like a slap in the face. Five weeks more to endure until it's all over (at least until next year….!).

I'm sure I (like many of you) will have much more to say about The Day as it draws closer...

  2. It's such a painful reminder. I have the added (bad)luck of having it coincide with my birthday every few years.

We'll all have to hide away on our own little island.

  3. I don't know what to say but I wanted to let you know I read your blog today. Since my third and for now final failed IUI I have rediscovered my love of good red wine! Small consolation.

  4. Ouch.

They seem to get earlier and earlier each year.

    Hugs.

  5. I seriously know where your head is at the moment. How many people know how much stamina it takes for those who walk in our shoes to step foot in any retail store as May draws near...

  6. I'm sorry. I've noticed the cards, too. This year I have to go to a baby shower on Mother's Day weekend. I was told to save the date 5 months in advance. What fertile person thought that was a great idea? (Answer: D.'s cousin's super-fertile wife, who is flying 3000 miles just for the occasion, so I can't get out of driving 50 miles.)

  7. I saw Mother's Day stuff out here about a week ago.

I guess it probably goes along with the trend of the run-up to holidays starting earlier than it used to - Halloween in the summer, Xmas right after Halloween, etc.

Other than it making more money for retailers, I've always wondered what's going on with that trend. Do people enjoy the anticipation of the day more than the day itself?

  8. I'm so sorry - I can only imagine how difficult that must be. I wish I could fashion special x-ray glasses that block it all out for you! What is amazing to me is that these stores really don't care about how it affects people - all they care about is exploiting a made up holiday. We are the collateral damage.

    Many hugs coming your way.

  9. I do my best to hide from the reminders, too. Sending you warm wishes.

  10. There is a lot of debate in Adoption World on the merits/demerits of Birth Mother's Day (the day before Mother's Day).

There should be another, then: UnMother's Day. Full of coffee, liquor, sushi, massages and bubble baths. And a mandatory trip to Europe (PJ has the idea).

    Thinking of you, LoriBeth.
