#MicroblogMondays: Was that you, Mom??

My mother loved chocolate. You could say she was an addict. There was always chocolate around our house when I was growing up.  Most of all, there were KitKat bars. Mom loved all kinds of chocolate, but KitKats were her favourite, and she had at least one finger of a bar every night before she went to bed (and often more). She had a stash in a kitchen cupboard (high up, so the smallest visiting Little Princess couldn't reach them), and more in the pantry, when she died in January. Whenever she travelled to the States (her home country), she took a stash with her. Mom was a proud American, but she always said the KitsKats there aren't the same, the Canadian bars are better. :)  (Apparently the KitKats in the UK -- where the treat originated -- are best, but she never got to find that out for herself. If & when I ever get to the UK, I am definitely doing a taste test...!)  

Santa always filled Mom's Christmas stocking with KitKat bars. The minister of her church had the inspiration to serve mini-KitKats (Halloween treat size) at the lunch after her funeral, which made everyone laugh when they saw them. I told her Mom would have loved it. 

So naturally, I thought of my mom when I heard this recent item on the news. They say you can't take it with you... but given that this happened not too long after Mom's departure from earthly existence, I really have to wonder...!

Personally, I like KitKats, and I will often tuck one (usually a chunky bar) into my purse for a snack whenever we're flying somewhere -- but my favourite bars have always been pure milk chocolate -- Aero (which also originated in the UK) -- and Jersey Milk -- a Canadian classic which (horrors!) has apparently been discontinued.  :(  My favourite chocolate indulgence these days is Lindt/Lindor milk chocolate balls (large or small). How about you?)

  1. Oh, I love this! My husband’s maternal grandmother loved KitKats and always carried them in her purse and would give them out to people, including us. Also, that is so special they were served at her funeral. I had no idea that they have different versions/recipes in Canada and the UK! I wish we’d tried some when we were in England last summer. I love Dove chocolate, as well as Frango Mint Chocolates and Fannie Mae Mint Meltaways. Thank you for sharing and I affirm how meaningful it can be to have this moments that feel like signs from our moms and other deceased loved ones. Sending lots of love your way as you grieve your loss and celebrate your mom’s life.

  2. my favourite chocolates are Gorenjka with hazelnuts (originally: from Slovenia) / Milka with hazelnuts or noisette / Lindt Lindor / many more :)

  3. I had no clue that the KitKat was different, but that makes sense because Cadbury bars are amazing in the UK, meh in Canada, and inedible here. Is it the chocolate? My treat to myself is usually a Ritter Sport. Chocolate and books are usually my overseas purchases to bring back. And tea.

    1. Yes, apparently there are differences in the chocolate. When I Googled "KitKat US vs Canada" the AI summary told me "Canadian KitKats (made by Nestlé) are generally considered superior to American KitKats (made by Hershey), featuring a creamier, richer chocolate with higher cocoa content, whereas US versions are seen as sweeter with a waxy, sugary taste. Canadian bars use milk ingredients for a smoother taste, while American bars are often described as having a crispier, more "pyramid" shaped, "wafer-first" profile."

      The AI for "KitKat US vs UK says, similarly: "UK KitKats (made by Nestlé) are generally considered richer, creamier, and less sweet than US KitKats (made by Hershey), largely due to higher cocoa/fat content and different milk ingredients.
