#MicroblogMondays: Leave the iced capp ;)

This is non-ALI or CNBC-related, but this story in the New York Times last week caught my eye (gift link):  a debate over whether it's okay to show up for a job interview with an iced coffee in hand -- which apparently some young job-seekers have been doing (!).

I showed dh & he said, "Why is this even an issue?? NO!"

I agree... I know we're both old-school (and maybe just plain old, lol), but seriously??

What do you think?

  1. I'm 60 (so Gen X) and retired and I lived through the change from professional attire, wearing skirts and heels and hose, to casual Fridays all the time, jeans and khakis and polos and even t-shirts. I don't think the iced coffee matters. What matters is ability and experience and integrity, etc, not the drink of choice. Is the person pleasant and friendly? Are they competent?
Most employees drink coffee in the office and some bring their own. So if they worked at your office, you'd send them home if they brought in an iced coffee? You wouldn't, (right?) so why in an interview would you object?
Its such a non-issue to me that I struggle to understand why its an automatic no.

  2. An automatic no from me too, despite the previous comment. What, are they going to slurp their way through the interview? It doesn't show any respect to the interviewer, or their surroundings. Are they going to put a wet coffee on the board table or interviewer's desk if they have to get documents or look at something? And it also means the interviewee specifically chose to buy an iced coffee knowing they are going into a formal interview in a few minutes. (An interview is formal, and completely different to day-to-day work in an office - in my opinion). That displays a disturbing lack of planning to me. An insistence on their comfort and convenience over recognition of what is appropriate. And would raise the question, would they do this on a client/stakeholder visit? I shudder! lol

  3. I'm a hard no on this. Get the coffee well before, or after. Drinking it during just feels unprofessional to me, messy (do they ask for a coaster?), and a bit unfocused. If you wouldn't eat a poppyseed muffin in an interview, I wouldn't drink something from outside either. If coffee was offered, I'd probably be too nervous to take it because of jitters and the very real risk of spilling it everywhere.
