#MicroblogMondays: Today, it's official!

Back in the '70s, there was a popular saying (in fact, I seem to remember it as a commercial jingle/song), "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." That little jingle has been running through my head the last few days as I approached this day.

Of course, EVERY day is the first day of the rest of your life, right?  ;) -- but today feels just slightly special because it's my first official day as a PENSIONER. Yes -- technically, I haven't worked since July 22, 2014 -- but as of today, February 1st, 2016, I'm officially retired. Freedom 55 lives!! lol

It feels like this day has been a long time coming. (I know, it probably feels like it for you readers too, right?? lol -- sorry!)  I never got to have a retirement party or say goodbye to my coworkers the way I imagined. :(  But dh is taking me out for lunch to celebrate.  A nice way to kick off February (my least favourite month) and the official start of this new phase in my/our life.

  2. Congratulations! My parents and some of my other relatives have all been retiring (not always by choice) in the last few years. For the most part they are having a blast. :)

  4. Is your mother finally reconciled to the idea?

    1. She hasn't made any noises about me going back to work in a while... but she has made several comments to me (influenced by her own experiences, I'm sure) about coping with the increasing costs of living/inflation while trying to live on a restricted income.

    2. I've told her about how none of the people who were let go at the same time as me and who are looking have found jobs yet. One of my cousins (female, same age as me) also lost her job awhile back & has yet to find another. So I think she realizes it's not that easy out there right now.

  6. Woo hoo! I find it hard to get my head around. I work in a very professional/government town, with relatively high standards of living, but no-one I know has retired under 60 years old. Most of us accept we're going to have to work till we're 65. If you can do it at 55, make the most of it! Hope you enjoyed that lunch, and indulged in a nice glass of something too, to celebrate!

    1. Well, it was brunch instead of lunch -- eggs & hashbrowns & ham. Doesn't quite mix with wine. ;) But dh & I are going out with BIL & SIL this weekend for dinner, so I will probably indulge then! :)

  10. Dear Loribeth, congratulations! I am very happy for you. This is just great - regular monthly income (and you are only few years older then me!)
    Wishing you all the best.

  13. Wow, congrats! I think that's great. I think you should have your own retirement party, complete with champagne - screw your old company.
