New movie/book: yay or nay?

(Potential triggers -- and spoilers!)

Dh & I were at the movies last weekend (the first one we've been to in a few months!), and saw the trailer for an upcoming movie called "The Light Between Oceans," starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander.

My jaw dropped as I realized what the movie was about. When I came home & started Googling, I learned the movie is based on a novel by the same name, which I vaguely recall seeing in bookstores.

Anyone read the book or heard about the movie? (It's not being released until September.)  I like both the actors, but I am not entirely sure I want to sit through this...

  1. It's been in my pile, I started reading it and put it down. I didn't find it upsetting as much as tiresome - that 'sigh. Yes. All women who can't have children inherently become crazy. None of us go on to live normal and healthy lives'.

    1. I read the book and I rolled my eyes at this sentiment, too.

  2. I have read it! A good couple of years ago. I'm going to go on Good Reads now and see what I put. Do they find a baby in a boat or something and pretend it's their own? I'll report back. I remember dying to read it but being underwhelmed, and it did not make me cry as promised in reviews.

  3. I gave it 3 out of 5 but didn't write a review. I remember it was anti-climactic after I'd read such good reviews about it. I didn't find it moving and it obviously wasn't very memorable. I like island settings and books about isolation but the plot about the child didn't really grab me. I recommend going straight to the film. I read The Tenderness of Wolves around the same time and absolutely adored that.

  4. Based on the book blurb (and the less than glowing reviews here), I'd skip the book. But I love both actors, so maybe the movie would be good? I would have to be in the right mood/frame of mind to see it, though.

  5. I didn't mind the book - it is very sad though. If you're feeling raw at all - maybe skip it. If you're ok, then try it. I am glad I read it - it was a good read - but sad.

  6. I remember seeing this book. I decided not to read it. Sometimes I can get over a plotline that's a little too close, and sometimes I figure the book is not worth the collateral damage. I feel like I started a similar book (or maybe it was this one, or was it The Memory Keeper's Daughter? Similar feeling title) and gave it back to the person who lent it to me after the first chapter. No thank you. I'll pass on the movie, too.

  7. This just came on my radar and I am interested in seeing/reading it. I'm interested what you decide and, if you engage, what you think.
