#MicroblogMondays: Odds & ends

  • I always feel like I'm "cheating" whenever I do an "odds & ends" post, especially for #MicroblogMondays... but I couldn't come up with anything else, and I already had an "odds & ends" post started, so...  ;)
  • Older Nephew & his wife -- who have been living with BIL & SIL for several years now -- first in a tiny apartment in the basement, and now upstairs, since the birth of little Great-Nephew in November -- have put a deposit on a new townhouse in a new development that's currently under construction. Both sets of parents are helping with the down payment to defray the mortgage costs. It's in a small town, about a 30-40 minute drive from here, and will be about a 45-minute drive to work for Older Nephew (slightly less for his wife, once she returns to her job after maternity leave). They had to go that far afield to find anything remotely more affordable than what's available hereabouts -- but they're still paying a ridiculous price for a townhouse so far out from the city, IMHO. :p  They likely won't be moving until next fall or even next Christmas, but we're already feeling a little sad. It's not THAT far away -- and I understand their desire to spread their wings and get a place of their own (he's 31 years old, after all...! & they've been married three years already -- dh & I were on our own long before that age) -- but still, we will miss having them -- and little Great-Nephew -- and even (especially?? lol) the dog -- closer by.
  • Here's an interesting tidbit I learned from a CBS Sunday Morning profile last week:  did you know that Raffi, the children's entertainer, does not have children himself (by choice)?
  • I have Blogger set up to email myself my posts when I publish them as a form of backup -- but this can be hit or miss, on & off.  Example: My review of  "Uncanny Valley" on Jan. 25 was the first post sent to me since Oct. 3 (my review of "The Education of Brett Kavanaugh")(!). Almost four months, and 50 posts later... that's quite a gap!  (And this is not the first time that's happened!)  The mysteries of technology...??! Has this happened to anyone else?
You can find more of this week's #MicroblogMondays posts here.

  1. Oh no, BIL and SIL and GN and the dog are moving? I can definitely understand you feeling a bit sad, though. I miss my nieces and nephews, and have only once ever had one of them in the same city.

Good grief, that's a long break between emails! I have never done that. But you've reminded me to go back up my blog drafts documents. (I save all my blog posts and ideas in a word document, and save it to my laptop, hard drive, and cloud. Paranoid much? lol)

Your Odds and Ends are like my Monday Miscellany posts. I feel a bit guilty, too. But I for one really like these snippets of your life.

    1. BIL & SIL aren't moving, but Older Nephew, his wife, Great-Nephew (their baby) & the dog are. Or will be, once their townhouse is built. :( Sorry if that wasn't clear. Younger Nephew is actually just a few blocks away from us, but we've been seeing Older Nephew & family a lot more simply because they've been living at BIL's -- we're over there at least once a week. We knew they wouldn't be living there forever, but we did hope they'd be a little bit closer. :( It's not like they'll be THAT far away, but it will still be different!

    2. Yeah, I knew exactly what you meant, so don't know why I wrote BIL and SIL! Perhaps I was starting to say they'd be disappointed too. Clearly, my brain hadn't engaged! lol

  2. I agree with Mali, it's nice to get snippets of your life! And sadness, I'm sorry that everyone's moving further away. And that it's so expensive for them. That's a bummer. I love finding that people who have made a career around people and children don't have kids. I feel like yelling, SUCK IT, People Who Think That To "Get" Kids You Must Have Them! ha. Dolly Parton is one of those people for me. :) Happy Monday!

    1. Hi Elizabeth! Thanks for commenting. I'm not sure how I first found your blog (probably from someone else's blogroll?) but I have enjoyed reading it, and I'm happy if others have found you through me!

  4. Um...those kids are ALSO going to be sad to move away from their back-up. All your visits and the grandparents right there - they have no idea what a change it will be when it's just them. Independence will be great, though! But it will be hard for them. So, tell DH he's going to have to drive you over every now and then to give them a break. And hey - maybe you'll get the chance to give some input on decorating too. That might be fun.

    1. You're right... I'm not sure they know what they're getting themselves into! (Of course, we didn't either when we bought our first house! lol) I asked the wife what the town was like and she said, "It's SMALL." Like, 5,000 people, versus 100,000 in this suburban community (which is where she & Older Nephew grew up), which is part of the Greater Toronto Area (6 million plus). So yeah, it's going to be a bit of culture shock for them, I think! Not to mention the commute to work and the distance from family & friends (and easy babysitting, lol). But, they'll learn!

  5. I love this about Raffi. He's an amazing person. That's too bad everyone is moving futher away. That's crazy expensive though. I like your little tidbits. :)

  6. Real estate in & around Toronto is totally ridiculous... The vast majority of young people simply cannot afford to buy without help (and renting has become pretty expensive right now too). They're moving further & further away to find something they can afford, and as a result, the prices are going up in those communities too. :(
